Does This Look Like an IKEA Kitchen to You?
Because it is.
And here’s why I did it again.

When we decided to renovate this kitchen, I knew two things: I wanted it to be a bold classic, and I wanted it to function beautifully for our real, everyday life. This is my second IKEA kitchen — and this one is definitely my most daring — but the decision to use IKEA again wasn’t about trend. It was about strategy.
The Cabinet Boxes Are Solid (and Smart)
IKEA’s cabinet system comes with a 25-year limited warranty, which, as a homeowner and someone who has lived in multiple houses thanks to Coast Guard moves, really matters to me. Kitchens are an investment. Knowing the bones of the space are backed long-term gives me peace of mind.
At the end of the day, cabinet boxes are boxes. What matters is that they’re sturdy, functional, and built to last — and these are.
IKEA Kitchens Don’t Have to be DIY
Contrary to popular belief, I didn’t have to assemble a thing. We worked with @ikeadreamkitchen in Hampton Roads for the install and highly recommend them! Neil and his team looked over our layout and went through it with a fine-tooth comb. We ordered, they assembled, and I didn’t have to lift a finger. In our Norfolk kitchen, they acted as our contractor as well, managing the entire full-gut remodel of our kitchen there.
IKEA does have kitchen planners on staff to help you with your design, but if you have a local company like European Kitchens, I suggest going with installers who not only know IKEA kitchens as designers, but also know what to look out for as installers.
The Drawer System Is Unmatched
If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you know I will forever choose deep drawers over lower cabinets.
Why? Because you can actually see what you own.
No more digging into dark lower cabinets. No more forgotten appliances hiding in the back. Everything has a place, and everything is visible. In a busy household (with kids constantly grabbing snacks while I’m cooking), that visibility is everything.
In fact, I haven’t even scratched the surface when it comes to the drawer customization that IKEA offers.
One of my favorite parts of using IKEA’s system is the layout flexibility. We were able to design real “zones” in this kitchen:
-
A refrigerator zone that’s just far enough away to avoid congestion
-
A prep zone centered around the island
-
A scullery that hides small appliances and pantry overflow
-
Easy-access drawers where the kids can grab what they need
My suggestion is to head to the store and open up all the drawers there. You will probably be overwhelmed with the options, so go home and think about how you actually use your kitchen. Do you have a ton of spices that need their own drawer? Are you tired of unloading your dishwasher but storing your dishes across the kitchen in an upper cabinet? Do you have room for your baking sheets, or are you storing them in your oven? Is your entire family underfoot as you cook because they’re rooting through the refrigerator beside you? Note all of the pain points you have AND the things you like about your current kitchen, and then pick your customizations.

It Lets Me Spend Where It Shows
Here’s the truth: I don’t want to overspend on cabinet boxes that no one sees.
Using IKEA allowed us to allocate more of the budget toward the details that elevate a kitchen:
-
Lighting
-
Hardware
-
Appliances
-
Countertops
Those are the elements that give a kitchen personality. Those are the details that make it feel uniquely yours.
The Flexibility for the Future
Another huge reason I did it again? If I ever want a new look, I don’t have to gut the entire kitchen. I can swap fronts and dramatically change the feel of the space without starting from scratch.
That kind of flexibility makes bold decisions feel less risky — and a lot more fun.
It’s Not About the Brand. It’s About the Design.
This kitchen is proof that it’s not about where the cabinet boxes come from. It’s about the design, the layout, and the details layered on top.
Would you have guessed it was IKEA?
Be honest.
