Over the past week, we’ve been inching closer to the finish line of selling our Florida house. As you might recall, we’re under contract with a buyer and need to be out by June 25. Last week, we had our inspection, and while the buyers were here, they made a request – they’d like to buy our furniture! They requested we put prices on the pieces we’d be open to selling, so I rushed and created my own estate sale.
This house definitely leaned more coastal and contemporary than I would normally go. Our Williamsburg home will lean more traditional, so I wasn’t totally opposed to selling some pieces that don’t fit the Virginia house vibe.
Some of our furniture is also at the end of its life. A lot of it, I purchased second hand at estate sales, so dings and scratches are common. We’re also exiting our military move era, so we’re ready for some grown-up pieces that we don’t have to worry about damaging.
But they’re asking for things like our Frame TVs and my marble dining table that I just recently bought. Those are pieces that I definitely still want, but they’re a pain – and also risky – to move. If I choose not to sell them, and they get damaged, I’ll regret not just selling them.
I also didn’t want to rush into buying furniture for the new house right away. I wanted to slowly add pieces, living in the house first and seeing how we use each space, but if I sell the furniture, I’ll almost be forced to make those decisions right away.
I also have a hard time letting things go. It was only three years ago that we were a family of four, single-family income, and I wouldn’t buy myself anything nice, let alone a marble-top table. It feels hard to give away some of those pieces so soon, that I didn’t get their full value quite yet…
But a lot of it won’t fit in the new house anyway, so it’s better to make money on them now. It’ll save us from having to move them, pay to store them while we’re finishing the house. And who knows… some of it may not even fit.
So I think I’m going to sell it all.
And buy myself some killer new pieces for the Virginia house.
Stay tuned.
xoxo
Jill
