This is the darkest room in our house, and while we’ve made some structural changes to brighten it (like opening walls and adding can lights), we needed some help in the decor department to breathe some light and life into it. The first new change is this checkered rug by Magnolia Home. I love its classic yet bold pattern that leans a little contemporary and masculine—perfect for balancing the darker, traditional tones of the room’s furniture. I got it in a 9×12, which leaves about two feet on either side of the room. And yes, I am a big fan of mixing patterns! I think the stripes of my couch play nicely with the check. I love this trick: sometimes adding a large rug makes the room feel even bigger, especially when it’s light in color.
Next, I added this chest of drawers in the corner, and it’s quickly become one of my favorite pieces in the room. The quality is incredible—it’s solid, beautifully finished, and feels so high-end for the price. I actually pulled inspiration from the burl wood console we added to our condo (also from Wayfair!). We loved the look of that one, but it was too wide for this spot. I wanted something with a similar style and warmth, but more compact—somewhere to drop our keys and everyday essentials since we tend to use this door the most. The bonus? The drawers are extra deep, so they’re perfect for storing puzzles, blankets, and all the little things that tend to pile up.
I also added this elegant gold mirror over the chest! I wanted a mirror in this spot so we can check ourselves before leaving the house, and this one had to be it. As for adding more light into this room, this gold mirror reflects light beautifully and instantly makes the room feel brighter and more elegant. It’s one of those pieces that elevates the space without trying too hard.
