There’s something about decorating for the holidays that instantly shifts the whole mood of our home, and my foyer tree is always the first thing I look forward to putting up. It’s the one tree I get complete creative freedom on — no family ornaments, no preschool crafts, no vacation souvenirs — just a full design moment.
And yes… that might be a little controversial. But as much as I adore our sentimental trees throughout the house, this one is my favorite because it’s so easy to take in visually. A single color story, subtle texture, and a few thoughtful accents make it feel both calm and elevated the moment you walk through the door.
Curious to know which kind of tree you prefer! Sentimental? or more decor-inspired?
My Inspiration: Magnolia Leaves
This year’s theme started with something simple: the magnolia leaf. I’ve always loved the contrast of its rich, dark green top and velvety chocolate-brown underside. Since my foyer tree is already a classic green, I wanted to bring in that deep brown accent for balance — and I found exactly what I needed on Wayfair.
Wayfair had the perfect chocolate brown ornament bulbs, the exact shade I had in mind. I ordered two sets, and they arrived quickly and were packaged so nicely that I’ll be reusing the box for storage. The color is warm, dimensional, and adds the perfect amount of drama against the green branches.
I had a few leftover magnolia leaves from a floral arrangement and sprinkled them into the tree for added texture, but Wayfair also has beautiful faux magnolia stems that would work wonderfully year after year. These berry stems in blue and white add some lovely texture, too.
Wayfair has such a wide selection for holiday decorations – decor for Christmas trees, garlands, even outdoor decorations. And with fast shipping, my ideas can quickly become reality.
The Velvet Bow Moment
I’ve been loving the velvet bow trend for the last few Christmases, and the chocolate brown velvet ribbon I found ties everything together — literally and figuratively. One spool gave me enough ribbon for about a dozen bows. I made them in different lengths and simply tucked them into open spaces between the bulbs. The softness of the velvet next to the gloss of the ornaments is such a pretty contrast.

A Fresh Seasonal Vignette Beside the Tree
Next to the tree, on the chest of drawers in our foyer, I wanted a small vignette that felt festive but not overdone. I started with a rosemary plant — my absolute favorite seasonal greenery. It smells incredible and feels like an understated nod to the holidays.
From there, I added a pop of red with a plate, plus two of my favorite Wayfair finds:
-
A classic hurricane glass, which you’ve seen me use year-round — on our mantle with battery-operated candles, as a vase for arrangement, and even filled with potpourri as a centerpiece. It’s one of those pieces that always finds a job.
-
An evergreen diffuser that is strong. I recommend it for a larger room because the scent really carries. The best part is that it makes my faux tree smell lifelike when guests walk in. It fills the entire downstairs with that Christmas-morning feeling.
